ONE YEAR LATER
Adam woke before dawn, kissed a heavily pregnant Eve goodbye, and left the house. He carried a large sack of grain over one arm and a skin of water in the other. Mahaz, Ravid, and Jabril met him in the center of the courtyard, each of them carrying fruit and nuts their wives had packed in goatskin sacks the night before. He shouldnât be going, as he had no use for Cain or his kin. But after many talks with his sons over the previous months, he had finally agreed that Eve was right. His presence might keep their other sons from following Cainâs way. If he didnât go, he was sure to regret his choice.
âDo we have the gift?â Adam asked as the four of them walked toward the pen where they kept a small herd of donkeys. He planned to give the grain to Cain as a peace offering, but his sons were supposed to bring produce from the land Cain once loved.
âI already loaded the sacks of vegetables and skin of olive oil on the donkey,â Mahaz said, his long strides reminding Adam of the days of his youth. Adam still felt vigorous, but not quite as young or energetic as his sons appeared to be.
They reached the pen and took two of the donkeys, one to leave with Cain and one to help carry their own food home again. âWeâre all set, Father,â Jabril said, his jaw set as though he was not at all sure this trip was wise.
Adam wondered if Jabril was the right one to accompany them since Cain had killed his wifeâs first husband. âAnd all of you are still sure you want to go?â he asked.
âWeâre sure,â Jabril answered.
Adam almost wished Eve could be with them, but her time was too near. Even she admitted the trip would not be wise in the end.
Adam grabbed a stick from the ground and set out toward Nod. It would take them days to arrive, and each man carried various weapons with them in case of wild animals.
As they walked through the winding hills, questions churned in Adamâs mind. If God had sent his son away, didnât that mean the rest of the family should break off contact with him? Could God forgive Cain? And if He couldnât or wouldnât, then Adam was justified in feeling as he did. This visit could simply tempt his other sons to want to live where Cain did. To escape the family compound and wander off on their own.
If he were honest, Adam had thought now and then of moving his family to another area of the earth. Farther from Eden. Not because he wanted to leave God or the altar he had built to honor Him but because Eve still longed too much for Eden.
He missed Eden, but to go back only increased the memories of that day. The day they had disappointed the Creator and lost the privilege of His daily presence.
Why would Eve
